Obituary for Lemuel Elbert Compton

Lemuel Elbert Compton, born on May 25, 1928, in Miller, Missouri, to Jasper Allen Compton and Golden Belva Parnell Compton, was promoted to glory into the arms of his Lord and Savior on March 31, 2018.

Lem was a 1947 graduate of Miller High School. He briefly attended Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield, returning home to care for his father. He worked in a variety of jobs, including farming and manufacturing, before joining the United States Air Force in November of 1948.

Lem was married to Delores Sue Childress Compton on November 21, 1953, in Carthage, Missouri. Lem and Sue were in business for 41 years in Mount Vernon. They owned and operated the Root Beer Stand, Compton's Drive-In, and Compton's Jewelry Store.

Faith and friends were important to Lem. He was baptized at the Miller Methodist Church in May of 1951 and later joined First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Mount Vernon in May of 1955. Lem served the Lord in numerous ways, as a church officer, Sunday school superintendent, committee member, leader, Elder and Elder Emeritus. He was active and involved with the larger church, attending many meetings, rallies and assemblies.

Lem loved sharing his talents of cooking and baking with friends and family. He is remembered for fixing biscuits and gravy for the Men's breakfast at church, and making gooseberry pies and desserts for fellowship dinners and Manna Time.

In addition to time in the kitchen, Lem enjoyed gardening, growing fruit and nut trees, producing berries and caring for his lawn.

Lem and Sue traveled extensively throughout the eastern states searching libraries and cemeteries for genealogy information. From their research Lem published a book on family history. During this time friendships were made with new-found family members.

Survivors include daughter, Sara Suellen Compton and husband, Terry Peterman, of Nevada, Missouri, brother, James Gilbert Compton of Mount Vernon; nieces, Emily Kay Cartwright and Mary Craver, nephew, Jim Garrison, and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sister, Ina Lee Garrison Marsh.

Services are under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home with visitation at the Funeral Home on Thursday, April 5, 2018, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and services at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Rev. David Nordyke officiating on Friday, April 6, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Mt. Vernon IOOF Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Mount Vernon for either the Memorial Fund or the Youth Camp Scholarship Fund, Children’s Emergency Fund of Mount Vernon or the charity of your choice in care of the funeral home.
