Obituary for Betty Jo Richardson

Betty Jo (Loe) Richardson died Saturday, December 30, 2017, at her home. She was 94.

Betty was born September 10, 1923, to Jim and Alice Loe. She was raised in the coal mining community of Shibleys Point, Missouri, and lived for awhile on a ranch in Oregon. Her father’s work as construction foreman during the building of Highway 174 brought the family to Mt. Vernon the second half of her senior year in high school.

She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1942 and married Ray Gene Richardson October 5, of that year. They were married nearly 75 years, living most of those years in Mt. Vernon.

During World War II, while her husband served overseas, Betty worked as a “Rosie, the Riveter” — riveting wings for small planes — at a plant in Wichita, Kansas. After the war, she helped her husband on their small farm; kept the books and helped operate his radio and television business; and attained her ham radio license. She worked at Ozark Electric Cooperative and the Missouri State Chest Hospital before retiring in 1985. At the same time, she was raising their son, Joe, caring for her family and home, growing big gardens and canning the produce.

Throughout her life, she and Ray Gene worked side by side on cemetery restoration, genealogy, local history and many other community projects. Along with Ray Gene, she was honored as Mt. Vernon Alumni of the Year and grand marshal of the 2000 Mt. Vernon Christmas Parade.

Betty was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Elk Horn Prairie chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Lawrence County Historical Society.

Betty was a woman of tremendous faith and fortitude. She faced many obstacles in her declining years. At the age of 85 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she underwent surgery and chemotherapy. Her beloved husband suffered a stroke following open heart surgery in 2012. She spent the last 5 years caring for him up until his death on June 18, 2017. Her only son, Joe, passed away in 2014 from a heart attack.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Katie and Michael, and her 2-year-old great-grandson Joseph, all of whom reside in California. Her family will remember her for the love she gave them. Family was everything to Betty and there wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for them. She will be sorely missed.

In addition to her husband and son, Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond Loe, a second brother who died in infancy, and her parents Alice and Jim Loe.

A funeral service under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018, at the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ. Burial will be at the Mt. Vernon IOOF Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Mt. Vernon IOOF Cemetery or the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in care of the funeral home.
