Obituary for James "Andy" Nivens

J.A. (Andy) Nivens, age 98, of La Russell, Missouri, passed away at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. He was born the middle child of seven on the family farm November 2, 1920, to George and Addie (Vaughn) Nivens.

Andy graduated from Mt. Vernon High School on May 11, 1939. Sometime after graduation, he and his brother, Delbert, lived in Wichita, Kansas, where Andy worked for Boeing before the United States joined WWII. Andy recalls that he was standing on a street corner in Springfield, Missouri, when he learned that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theater as part of the Naval Air Fleet maintenance crew. After his service concluded, he returned to the farm where he worked for nearly 66 years.

He married Vera Ruth Brock on January 17, 1951, in Bentonville, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on August 8, 2001.

Andy worked for a number of years at the Lawrence County ASCS office measuring crops and administering farm programs. He was elected to serve more than 20 years on the ASCS County Committee.

Some of his favorite things to do were to tease his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a particular knack for working on anything with moving parts. He worked on farm equipment, motorcycles, his grandkids toys, and unprogramming TV remotes. He was able to take part in an Honor Flight to visit Washington, DC in 2012. Andy was a member of the American Legion Lewis Wilkinson Post 588 for seventy years.

He was a lifelong member of the Fellowship Baptist Church and attended Round Grove Baptist Church in his later years.

Andy is survived by his son, James Nivens, and his wife, Carolyn; his daughter, Debbra Bowles and her husband, Roger; four grandchildren, Andrew (Anna) Bowles, Amanda (Justin) Holder, Rachel (Matthew) Hoemann, Jessica (Corey) Bennett and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Addie, wife, Vera, three sisters and their spouses and three brothers and their spouses.

His life will be remembered at a graveside service, under the direction of the Morris-Leiman-Mosher Funeral Home in Miller at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2019, at the Fellowship Cemetery.
