Obituary for Harold Lee Umberger

Harold Lee Umberger was born on October 22, 1936, to Pearl Krutsinger and Wilbur Umberger in Britton, South Dakota. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his beloved family on May 12, 2019, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

Harold is survived by his wife Marion Umberger of 33 years of Mt. Vernon, Missouri; son, Harold (Leslie) Umberger of King George, Virginia; one sister, Joyce Wilson of Mayo, Florida; seven step children, Jim Periman, Bill Periman, Brenda Obert, Debbie Lantz, Nancy Periman, Ben Lowery, and Brian Lowery. Harold was blessed to be grandfather to 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren, uncle to 14 nieces and nephews, and a friend to many.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, two sisters, Darlene Phillips and Rose (Rosie) Jones, infant brother Jimmy and his son Richard Kevin Umberger, all of whom he loved dearly.

He spent his life serving his Lord and community any way he could. He was an active member of Mount Vernon Church of Christ and Monett Church of Christ. He was also an active member of the Mount Vernon Lion’s Club, where he was the 2001 Lion of the Year. Harold was dedicated to helping people in his community however he could. He delivered Meals on Wheels, mowed yards and enjoyed visiting with people. He had a very giving and caring heart, a jovial personality and always brought a smile to everyone’s face. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank the Palliative care staff at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, for the care they offered Harold and his family. Harold retired from the Mount Vernon Rehabilitation Center.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Burial will follow at the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery. Viewing will be held from 9:00-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, in the funeral home chapel.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Fair Haven Children’s Home in Strafford, Missouri in memory of Harold in care of the funeral home.
