Obituary for Carroll Joy Herzberger

With a teardrop in her eye Carroll Joy Herzberger, age 85, passed away Sunday, March 09, 2019. She was surrounded with family by her side in Mt. Vernon Missouri. An intimate family gathering was held in her Mount Vernon home.

She was the daughter of Velma Corey Grace (Brown) Moses and George Moses. Carroll was born in Laconia, New Hampshire December 11, 1933.

Carroll married Chester George Herzberger August 25, 1979, in Orange County, California. With her family grown and on its own, she educated herself and was licensed to operate and maintain emergency care services for children through the State of California’s Department of Social Services. For years she provided loving care for many children. One of the infants who melted her heart she took under her wing and obtained guardianship and later adopted.

In 1992, Carroll, Chester and Andy moved to Mt. Vernon, Missouri from Orange County, California. She worked for the Mt. Vernon U.S. Postal Service and the Billings U.S. Postal Service as a custodian and part-time at the Hot Spot Gas and Convenience Stop.

During Carroll’s spare time she volunteered at the Lawrence County Humane Society providing care for the animals. When the shelter was unable to provide for more animals, she would take them home. This was the beginning of Emmanuel’s Tails with the mission of providing care for discarded and abused animals, restoring them to good health and adopting them out. Emmanuel’s Tails evolved into a non-profit organization, a no kill shelter placed into the “More 4 You” foundation established by Carroll and her husband.

Carroll suffered from sugar diabetes which resulted in the amputation of one leg. Soon after, she was diagnosed with renal failure. After battling all six stages of this disease, at age 85, she surrendered her life into the Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.

The ashes of Carroll and her son, Steven Robert Rice, who passed away at age 43, will be buried together.

Carroll is survived by her husband Chester Herzberger, sister Beatrice Pelletier, children Donalyn Rice (Michael) Shroetke, Robin Ann Rice (Steve) Madox, Cynthia Marie Boehm and Andrew Perry Herzberger, step daughters Lyn (Tom) Nelis, Kim (Rick) Robinson; ten grandchildren, three step grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

We are going to miss you mom.

Note from dear friend.
Carroll gave with enduring love to animals tossed away to die. Her entire life was devoted to homeless and abused canines. I know that she never wanted credit for what she did. She only wanted God to be magnified and glorified. She fulfilled a command that God gave. She cared for the animals he gave us. Her wish and desire are no flowers or cards just give the amount you would spend to a No Kill Animal Shelter in her memory. She would also tell you to be blessed and to love one another.

Burial will be held at a later date at the East View Cemetery west of Stotts City, Missouri. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
