Obituary for Georgia Opal Washam

Georgia Opal Shaffer Washam, age 98, of Miller, Missouri, passed away at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at her home in Miller.

Georgia was born January 20, 1920, to Flavius Lane and Nancy Elda Evelyn Casteel Shaffer in the Round Grove community, northwest of Miller. She attended Scott Elementary School and was a 1936 graduate of Miller High School, where she was valedictorian.

After high school, Georgia taught elementary school and attended State Teachers College, (now MSU) in Springfield, Missouri, teaching during the winter months and attending classes during the summer. She taught ten years in Dade and Lawrence County schools.

Georgia and James Noel “Short” Sexton were married in 1937, a marriage which ended in 1952. Three daughters, Judith Nolene, Jan Marlene and Jeanie Rae, were born to this union.

In 1953, Georgia married Eugene V. “Chig” Stater. They owned and operated various businesses in the Miller area, including Stater’s Sundries located on Main Street in Miller during the 1960’s. Gene preceded Georgia in death in February 1975.

At various times throughout her life, Georgia was employed in the Miller areas as a sales clerk for Hobb’s Store, Otasco, John Deer Implement Company, Glidewell Hardware, MFA Exchange and Don’s Crossroads.

Georgia joined the Round Grove Baptist Church at an early age and attended Miller Baptist Church when able. She was a member of the Miller American Legion Auxiliary. Georgia especially enjoyed dances at area senior citizen centers. All Georgia’s friends and acquaintances were on a “first name basis” from the moment she first knew them.

Georgia married Gilford “Gip” Washam in November 1975.

She was preceded in death by her husband, “Gip” Washam in December 1981, her parents, step-son, Terry Washam and great-granddaughter, Kaylie Real.

Georgia is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Judith and Denny Goodman of Halltown, Missouri, Jan and Monty West of Miller, Missouri, and Jeanie and Bill Brasier of Springfield, Missouri; six grandchildren, Daryl Goodman and his wife, Teresa, of Halltown, Denise Perry and her husband, Bryan, of Republic, Brian Wilson of Willard, Brent Wilson and his wife, Heather, of Alabama, Jennifer Miller and her husband, Frank, of Miller and Jena McAmis and her husband, Steve, of Clever; ten great-grandchildren, Derrick, Danielle, Kristen, Kaitlyn, Maddie, Cole, Courtney, Kelsey, Pyper and Jelani; three great-great grandchildren, Bentley, Brynlee and Burkley and a sister, Flavia Friar of Marshfield.

Georgia is also survived by her step-family, Willis and Pat Washam of Springfield, and Kenneth and Jeanie Washam of Ozark and their families.

Services for Georgia will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2018, at the Morris-Leiman-Mosher Funeral Home in Miller, with Bruce Rinker officiating. Burial will follow at the Miller Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2018, the funeral home chapel.

Memorial donations may be made payable to the Miller Memorial Gardens Cemetery or the Miller Senior Center, in care of the funeral home.
